What are MP3 Files?

One question is why MP3 files became so popular. And another is why they took so long to achieve success. Way back in the mid to late 1990's everyone connected to the Internet very slowly by modem and the MP3 file format was created as a way of transferring single songs from one person to another over the Internet in a compressed format. Back in those days it was all about Nullsoft Winamp the MP3 player you install on your PC, mpg123 and Napster.

In a way, Napster is a story all in itself. A file sharing system that enabled members of the public to share all their music, and download anything they wanted - obviously this was cut off by the music industry as soon as possible because after all, why would you pay for music if you could get it for free?

But by then, with the growth in this an other peer-to-peer file sharing systems that allowed people to easily play and share MP3's the music industry had lost the plot. And their desperate legal flounderings set them against their audience. You could say that this behaviour by the recording industry is what has eventually given rise to the Pirate Pay service in Sweden.
