The ethick.com download area (used to be called Piglet but for reasons I divulge elsewhere it's now called ethick...) is where you can gain access to some of the better programs on the net. Downloads are all direct from program developers. Remember when you are downloading freeware it is nice to make a small donation to the developer, or at least say thanks!

  • Of all the countdown timers out there I've found this one to be just about the best. It's great to see they have added languages to the product so you can now count down in Austrian. It's worth visiting the Stupid Apps homepage to find out about all their other excellent software.

  • This program is old now and I've stopped using it, but for many years it nestled, hiddin in the bottom right hand corner of my screen, hiding all my programs until I needed them.
  • Hijack This

  • This program detects and helps you remove Internet browser homepage hijackers. Initially based on the article Hijacked!, but expanded with almost a dozen other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you should always consult with knowledgable people at Merijin's forum before deleting anything.

  • Ultraedit is my favourite Notepad replacement. It's an excellent program for handcoding HTML, and well worth paying the shareware registration fee. Some of the things I find really useful include the powerful and quick search and replace, colouring HTML and other code so that it is easier to read, and you can build macros that speed up boring tasks.

  • Pixie 3.1 is a tiny utility that tells you the colour of specific pixels on your screen. Excellent for website designers.
  • Absolute HTML Compressor

  • Sometimes when your HTML files get a bit big it's useful to be able to compress them. This free program takes the wasted space out of your web pages so they download faster. An alternative would be to write really neat code like Ecru then you wouldn't need to compress your code.
  • Fonts and font viewers
  • You can never have too many fonts, whether they are free or professional paid for fonts.
